Sexity

"I think I'm going to see Sex and the City today," I said thoughtfully as Scott tied his shoes while getting ready for work one Sunday morning.

"No, don't go see it by yourself," he protested.

"Going to the movies by myself doesn't bother me. Really. I worked at a movie theatre for six years, I'm well used to seeing movies alone," I retorted. And because I worked at a movie theatre for six years, I never go anymore. I wait for them to come out on DVD and I order them through my Blockbuster on-line membership. But my father had given me a $25 gift card to the movies for my birthday, this was the only thing being released in the near future that I could stand making the trip to the theatre for and sitting upright for two hours.

"No, don't go alone," he said again. "I'll go with you."

"You heard me, right? Sex and the City?" I raised an eyebrow.

"I'll go see it with you!"

"I thought I was doing you a favor by going to see it alone!" I laughed.

"No, I'll go," he shrugged, acting all nonchalant, like this was a part of his boyfriend duties.

Over the past two weeks while we've been trying to get our schedules to coincide to actually see the movie together, I've replaced my Gilmore Girl-sized hole in my nightly routine with the Sex and the City discs I bought off eBay years ago. (I got the entire series for $40. The only downside is that it is from Taiwan and occasionally a Chinese character appears in the corner of the screen. But really who cares when you have the entire series for 40 bucks?) And while Scott carefully avoided the bedroom when Lorelai and Luke were on the TV, he always found an excuse to join me when it was Carrie and Big. "I miss you, baby," he'd say. "I don't mind watching it if I get to lay with you for a few minutes."

Eventually I got tired of waiting (and avoiding blog posts discussing it) and brought up the subject of going alone again, "Really, it's no big deal. I'm not going to do that girl thing and secretly pout because you wouldn't go with me." And after he protested yet again, it hit me.

My boyfriend is a closeted Sex and the City fan.

And as we sat in the theatre last night drinking my $4.75 Coke, the person who laughed the loudest was the man sitting behind us.

I was out of the country when the movie came out, and tonight TONIGHT is finally the night I'm going to see it too. I can't wait! And, my boyfriend politely declined. I told him that he'd love the show if he ever gave it a chance.

He IS a closet fan! And I don't think he's the only one?

Was the film any good?

I found the film to be very true to the series, and the characters true to themselves as well. So if you loved the series, I think you'll love the movie!

I loved the movie, and I haven't actually seen the series.. my mum bought it, and when she's done, I'm going to have a go at it :)

Glad you found something to fill your Gilmore Girls space :)

Tell Scott there is no reason to be a closeted fan! There are plenty of men, straight ones too, who love SATC! Glad to hear you two enjoyed the movie.

That is the coolest thing I've read all week. SO funny and yet, totally awesome at the same time.

I got a $25 dollar gift certificate to the movies for Nurse Appreciation Week from the doctors I work for. I haven't used it yet as I've been waiting for Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Part II! to come out at the end of summer.

But...

If I go to the movies alone, I could stretch that sucker and see that AND Sex and the City!

Sarah, you are a GENIUS! :)

Amber- I KNOW!

After the movie, he was all, "I thought you would go alone so you could get more out of your gift card."

WHY DO YOU THINK I WAS SO OKAY WITH GOING ALONE IN THE FIRST PLACE!?!?!

Haha! So true!! I actually got hooked on SATC from my best friend's husband (the one who passed away last year)! Pretty much, if men say they don't like it, they are LYING. Glad you finally got to see it!

You'd be surprised how many closet male fans there is of that. It helps them understand women!

I just snarfed water at the visual of Samantha banging some guy while a Japanese Anime creature bops around in the corner of the screen.

PJ- Not quite that pervy. Just some Chinese letter, but who knows what it means!

Well, I got Jukebox hooked into GG, and I know he'll never go for SATC. Kudos Scott!

I don't think I did like the series. I liked the idea of it but I didn't like any of those women.

I'll still probably see the film, though, for closure.

It's good that he's a closet fan...because now you can watch your DVD's over and over

I've already seen it three times, and I'm ready to go see it again. Is that bad?

Wow, that is pretty funny. I think my boyfriend would rather stab his eyes out with a pencil than see SATC. The only thing he liked about the show was Kristen Davis, cuz he thinks she's hot.

Oh man - so jealous - I saw it for the second time tonight, but couldn't make The Hun go if I kidnapped him and drove him there!

I want to go buy the book tomorrow to just pore over the outfits.

I've never dated a guy who refused to watch SATC--they all secretly love it. Hot women and sex tips...what more could a man ask for? I went to a premiere party in Chicago and all the dudes were begging to tag along.

haha! that's way too cute! :)

I was the only one of three men in a packed cinema when I saw it. One of the men had clearly been dragged there by his girlfriend. The other was sinking into the seat beside me as everyone around us gave the occasional glance and giggle, thinking we were a couple. As ever.

Nonetheless, we still felt obliged to loudly pretend that despite not finding the screen for Indiana Jones we'd still stay and give this film a go.

This entry made me laugh. My ex husband was a huge Sex and the City fan, so much so that he got the entire dvd series in the divorce. :)
